Who Owns TikTok Now 2022?
The company that owns TikTok has selected a bidder for its Australian, New Zealand, and U.S. businesses. Oracle and Microsoft are teaming up to bid on the social network. It is expected to fetch at least $20 billion. Reddit users are averse to the watermark on the videos created with the platform. It is worth $20 to $30 billion. Although it is a popular app, many users find its watermark annoying.
ByteDance
ByteDance is an app factory, churning out apps and monetizing them through shared resources. The company has produced household apps like Douyin in China and Toutiao in the rest of the world. One of its many strengths is its ability to quickly iterate, and its self-governing products have consistently outperformed competitors. CEO Zhang oversees the entire company’s operations, with all senior executives reporting to him.
But the move comes amid an ongoing campaign by China to take back control of its domestic technology sector, which has produced some of the country’s most successful companies. China’s announcement comes just as a new Chinese data protection law takes effect in the country. Under the new law, companies are limited in what they can do with personal information and are bound to adhere to strict guidelines in how to use that data.
Microsoft
The news that Microsoft owns TikTok has raised eyebrows in the tech world. While it’s not a clear-cut buyout, the deal does mean that Microsoft will become a key partner for TikTok in the United States. The deal is meant to address concerns of the Trump administration regarding national security. Previously, TikTok was considered to be a potential target for shutting down in the US if it wasn’t sold. But in a recent announcement, Microsoft teamed up with Walmart to make a bid that surprised Wall Street. Microsoft has a software background and acquired LinkedIn – both of which have been used for marketing purposes. The company will also have access to its core audience of users.
The timing is also crucial. While Microsoft is pursuing a sale of TikTok in the United States, the company isn’t out of trouble just yet. After all, TikTok has been stuck in a holding pattern due to the Chinese government’s new rules against exporting AI technology. With the United States’ trade war with China and its influence over the Internet, TikTok could wind up as a geopolitical pinata for both countries.
Douyin
When it came to China, Douyin was the most popular social media platform for Gen Z, and the Chinese version is no different. This mobile video app became wildly popular for dance challenges in its early days. Now, it has expanded to encompass all kinds of video content. Douyin is now looking to capitalize on the popularity of TikTok in China. The site’s user base includes young Chinese aged 19 to 40. It is estimated that around 35% of users are from super cities in China. The number of third-tier cities is growing as well.
Although Douyin is a bit older than TikTok, it offers a similar user base. The app features micro-vlogs, business advice, and even videos by local authorities. The biggest drawback to TikTok is its lack of international expansion. Users in China cannot download the app from overseas Apple stores or Google Play stores. However, if you live outside of China, you can still download TikTok.
ByteDance & ByteDance Global
ByteDance is the Chinese tech giant behind the hit apps TikTok and Douyin. The company is notorious for its flat hierarchy. Employees can message the company founder, Zhang Yiming, directly on the company’s version of Slack, called Lark. In contrast, other Chinese tech companies are building more formal structures and silos.
However, the company is avoiding this scenario by owning a majority of TikTok Global. The company’s internal party committee is headed by vice president Zhang Fuping. Party members regularly study President Xi Jinping’s speeches and pledge to follow the party’s path in technological innovation. The Chinese company may also face legal repercussions if they fail to regulate their algorithms in accordance with Chinese regulations.
ByteDance Global are in talks with Microsoft to acquire TikTok. Microsoft has been in talks with ByteDance since the Trump executive order was signed. Oracle and Walmart both own minority stakes in the company. ByteDance Global are also preparing to launch an IPO.
