Does TikTok Tell You the Song It’s Playing?
If you have ever watched a video with a’spinning record’ icon at the end, you’ve likely wondered: Does TikTok tell you the song it’s playing? After all, the spinning record icon represents a song excerpt. Once you click on it, you’ll be shown the track’s name, along with a feed of other TikToks featuring that song. “Fake ID” by Riton and Kah-Lo is an example of a popular song TikTok; over 1.4 million videos have been made featuring this song. This is probably not the full extent of its popularity, though, but you can get the idea.
Shazam
If you’ve ever watched a video and wished you could immediately identify the song, you can now use the Shazam app to do just that. With a simple tap on the screen, the app creates a unique digital fingerprint and matches it against Shazam’s database the next time you connect to the Internet. If the song cannot be recognized, it’ll disappear from your pending Shazams.
If you’ve used Shazam on other applications, you know the process is similar. When you hear a song on a video, Shazam will identify the title and artist. It uses the microphone on your phone to hear the song and compares it with its database to find similar songs. It will return results within seconds. You can launch Shazam from your home screen or from your device’s drawer. Make sure you give your consent to the application to access your microphone.
Genius
One of the best parts of the TikTok app is that it tells you the song title when you tap the ‘play’ button. This way, you can easily listen to music without opening the app or spending time searching for lyrics. However, this feature does not save every song, so you can only choose the most recent ones. You can also highlight and annotate the lyrics to contribute to the app’s knowledge base. Scroll down to find the next song or listen to similar music.
You can also find lyrics in other places. Spotify, for instance, offers a playlist called Behind the Lyrics that includes lyrics from popular artists. When you play a song from this playlist, you’ll see annotations from Genius. These annotations are accompanied by commentary by the artists themselves. You can choose to enable or disable the annotations, but if you don’t, they will stream on all of your Spotify tracks.
TikTok
Does TikTok tell you the song when you tap on a video? No, but the feature does exist. The spinning record icon represents an excerpt of the song. Clicking on this icon will reveal the track name, along with the feed of other TikTok videos that contain that song. The “original sound” of a video can be anything from a person talking to a viral earworm.
Another example of a popular video on TikTok is from the fictional kids’ group The Backyardigans. This trio of cartoons had songs that were popular on TikTok in Summer 2021. While they were written for children, the video creators of TikTok are able to appreciate complex songcraft. Using original sounds is an innovative way to promote a song and increase its exposure.
Charli XCX
Charli XCX, a British alt pop singer, has been making headlines for her latest TikTok dance challenge. The singer has recently duetted with TikTok icon Addison Rae and even attempted the “Lock It” challenge. Charli XCX isn’t the only artist to have a song go viral on TikTok. Other artists, like Natasha Bedingfield, have also experienced success with their music videos.
Whether or not the new song is on the way, fans can’t wait to hear it! Charli XCX’s music video teased her upcoming collaboration with Rina Sawayama in a TikTok post, tagging the artist and titled the clip “2022 sneak peek.” The video has since been liked almost 30,000 times.
Unlock it by Charli XCX
“Unlock It” is a hot song that went viral on TikTok and is part of Charli XCX’s Pop 2 mixtape. The track features Kim Petras and Jay Park. The DJ Jeff Prior mashup quickly became a popular dance challenge on TikTok. While the video never topped the charts, it was a hit with fans and music critics alike.
While it may have been a viral hit, it is still only Pop 2 – so it’s hardly a modern-day Thriller. In fact, the Official Charts Company reports that the song has been streamed more than 20 million times globally and has been added to Spotify’s Viral Hits playlist. Still, it’s early days and the hype surrounding the single is not as high as it should be.
