What Was the Original TikTok?
The social network has made its way to the top of the list for video sharing websites, with 200 million active users in India. It has even gained a following in Thailand, with one in seven Thais using the platform. But TikTok hasn’t been without controversy. In February 2017, it settled claims that it illegally collected personal information about children. This settlement represented the largest civil penalty the Federal Trade Commission has ever received in a children’s privacy case.
YouTube
While the TikTok app has been a big hit, YouTube is quickly copying the strategy. YouTube is spending $100 million on professional video creators to make original short videos. The platform is also approaching TV production companies, offering them additional money for their videos and prominent placement on YouTube mobile. For the time being, YouTube is still not providing detailed user data. But it is looking into ways to make its short-form video editing process easier.
The first version of TikTok was released in 2009, and has grown to reach millions of users in 150 countries. However, the platform is not without controversy. While it may be the successor to YouTube, it still has its own unique features. See the article : How to Unblock Someone on TikTok. While the app is mainly popular with young people, it is still an unpopular platform among older users. It has also been criticised for being too childish and lacking adult features.
Vine
Until recently, the best way to share videos was with Vine. However, this short-form video app has since been shut down, which many people find frustrating. Vine became a phenomenon that became a meme in its own right. After September 11, the short-form video app started trending on Twitter, with one Vine quote receiving over 60,000 likes. In addition to the re-introduction of Vine, TikTok offers filters and other features. The app even offers a For You page where you can discover more videos, opposite of Vine’s following-centric feed.
One of the most frustrating aspects of Vine’s demise was that it failed to monetize creators, forcing the platform to shut down in the first place. Even worse, creators didn’t get paid for their quality content, making the business impossible to sustain. See the article : Does Walmart Sell TikTok Jelly Candy?. The company even faced problems retaining key executives, as two of its founders left the company in its most successful year and a third was laid off. These issues often plague hyper-growth network-effect startups, and Vine’s failure to embrace monetization strategies was a significant reason for the service’s demise.
The rise of video-sharing platforms such as Instagram and TikTok has been fueled by the growth of younger audiences. With hundreds of millions of users, these two platforms are in the spotlight for attracting young people. See the article : When Do You Start Getting Paid on TikTok?. However, the rapid-fire rhythm of TikTok hasn’t been replicated on Instagram. Its long-form videos will likely increase its advertising revenue and may change the dynamic of its video feed.
As an independent video-sharing platform, TikTok has taken social media by storm. First launched in China as Duoyin, TikTok was pushed globally in 2017. The platform allows users to create looping videos lasting up to 60 seconds. Instagram has been catching up to this growing community by introducing new features such as Reels, which allows users to post up to 15-second videos. However, the social media app has not completely eliminated TikTok.
Snapchat
While TikTok and Snap have been vying for the attention of teens, there’s been a significant gap between the two apps. Although both share a similar user base, TikTok has done better in reaching out to a broader demographic than Snap. A recent Wall Street Journal report found that teens frequently follow the accounts of middle-aged users. Although Snapchat hasn’t made much of an effort to expand its user base beyond the teen demographic, it’s still very much a growing part of the social media scene.
Though Snapchat has more daily users, the original TikTok app has gained 500 million active users. The platform was largely developed by college students looking for a way to make short videos and share them online. The videos are square, not tall, and scrolled through instead of being swiped. Users can even share videos that they’ve created with their friends, which is great for attracting new viewers. Despite its simplicity, TikTok has become one of the most popular social networks online.
Douyin
The Chinese version of TikTok, or Douyin, launched in September 2016 and has since grown to more than 100 million users. Users on the platform prefer short, funny videos, viral challenges, and live streaming. While Chinese TikTok users are predominantly young adults, there is an increasing number of users from third tier cities. During its first year, Douyin gained more than 50 million monthly active users.
Live-streaming is a popular feature on Douyin, where users can interact with the creators in real time. To live-stream, tap the live-stream icon in the upper right corner. Businesses use live-streaming to reach out to their viewers and increase their sales. Live-streaming is also available on TikTok, but the live-stream feature is currently available only for accounts with more than a thousand followers, although it is likely to be made available to all users in the future.
