By default, you can reply to anyone, but you can also limit replies to people you follow or those you tag in the tweet. If you can’t reply to a tweet, you’ll see a greyed-out icon, but you can still view it and retweet it, retweet with a comment, or “like” it.

Limiting who can reply to your tweet
Twitter recently introduced a new feature that lets users limit who can reply to their tweets. Previously, people could reply to any tweet that they mentioned or followed. When a limited number of people reply to your tweet, the reply icon will be greyed out. Even people who cannot reply will be able to see your tweet and still have the option to retweet with a comment or share your tweet.
You can also choose to restrict who can reply to your tweets to only those who follow you or mention you. If you want to limit who can reply to your tweets to only those you’ve mentioned, select ‘Only people you mention’. By choosing this option, people only mentioned in your tweet can reply to your tweets. However, people who weren’t mentioned in your tweets can still retweet, like, and share your tweet, so it’s important to be aware of this setting.
Hide a specific reply on your tweet

The reason to hide replies is to prevent users from tightly controlling their messages and to quell legitimate concerns. It also helps keep your message stream clean and free of spam or offensive messages.
This new feature will be rolled out in June. Twitter confirmed the feature in February. It will be an “experiment,” and depending on user feedback, it may be scrapped. In the meantime, you can hide specific replies if they’re offensive or irrelevant to your message. You can use this feature on both desktop and mobile. To hide a specific reply, simply find the tweet with the troublesome reply, click the ‘Hide reply’ button, and confirm your decision.
Limiting replies to those who follow you
Using the limited replies setting on Twitter will limit the people who can respond to your tweets. By default, anyone who follows you or mentions you will be able to reply, but other people will not be able to do so. The only exceptions to this setting are retweets with comments and likes. If you are concerned that people who don’t follow you may reply to your tweets, you can also turn this feature off.
Although many Twitter users dislike the thought of only being able to reply to those who follow them, it can prevent a lot of abusive responses. This feature is also useful for limiting unwanted replies to a topic that you are addressing. Whether you’re tweeting about your current song or a politically sensitive issue, limiting the number of people who can reply to your tweets can help keep your conversation on track.
