Copyright infringement is an unfortunate and costly reality. Fortunately, YouTube has a system for managing copyright violations and the costs of a copyright strike. In this article, we’ll cover:

YouTube automatically copyrights your content as you upload it

If you’ve created a video and uploaded it to YouTube, you may have been hit by a copyright claim. If so, you can dispute the claim. The dispute process takes a few days. If the claim is invalid, you can wait until it is settled to monetize the video. Otherwise, you can publish your video as usual and continue to receive ad revenue. The good news is, YouTube will not take down your video without your knowledge.

Content ID technology is used by YouTube to detect and protect content. YouTube’s system automatically searches for content that violates copyright laws and then files a copyright claim for the owner of the work. This technology can also detect videos that violate copyrights without a person realizing it. When this happens, you should make sure your videos are properly protected. For instance, if someone has uploaded a song and then posted it on YouTube, they can file a copyright claim and get their revenue.

Moreover, you should only use content that you created yourself or were authorized to use by the owner. Although some content can be uploaded without permission, there are many limitations on what you can do. To avoid copyright issues, only upload content that you own or have been given explicit permission by the owner. This can be confusing if you’ve uploaded a video that contains other people’s content. In case you’re unsure about copyright, check with your video’s creator to make sure that it’s yours.

Non-exclusive means that you still own the video

If you upload your video to YouTube, it is automatically copyrighted. However, if you do not want it to be copied, you must grant Google a non-exclusive copyright. The non-exclusive copyright means that you own the video, but you give it away to Google so that it can use it for marketing and advertising purposes. The non-exclusive copyright in YouTube also means that you still own the video.

Although registering with the Copyright Office is not required, you should do so if you have a high production value. While registering with the Copyright Office is not mandatory, it can protect your video in case someone else copies it. For example, a five-minute vlog might not require copyright registration, but a documentary film may require copyright protection. In such cases, you should register with the U.S. Copyright Office before uploading it to YouTube.

Besides being legally responsible for your video, you should take the necessary steps to protect it. Firstly, make sure that you state your video’s copyright status clearly in your terms and conditions. The Copyright Office will check your video file and confirm that it is indeed copyrighted. Otherwise, you can opt to upload the video to other sites if you want to protect it further.

Cost of a copyright strike

Getting caught by a copyright strike in YouTube can be costly. Although this feature is a great addition to the uploading process, it is far from perfect. You’re still responsible for checking your videos for infringing copyright before uploading them. And if you’re caught, YouTube will remove them from the platform permanently, even if you have no idea what they’re doing.

After the 90-day period has passed, the first copyright strike will expire. If the strike is the second one, you’ll need to complete YouTube’s Copyright School. This is similar to taking a speed awareness class. But be aware that copyright strikes can ripple through your YouTube channel, affecting your entire channel. A copyright strike can cause a 90-day demonetization. And if you’re a frequent YouTube user, a copyright strike can de-monetize your entire channel.

Copyright strikes in YouTube have very different costs. If the strike was issued in error, you can request that the material be removed by the copyright owner. You can also submit a counter notification to YouTube by asking the claimant to retract the material. You can learn more about YouTube copyright strikes in this video on the YouTube Creators channel. So, if you’ve posted a video or an image on YouTube and it is being claimed by another user, it’s time to take action.

What is Copyright in YouTube?
