The social network has a strong following worldwide. Its users are primarily female and over seventy percent of them are outside the US. This makes it a great platform to promote products and brands because internet users are more likely to interact with a brand&#8217;s posts on Instagram than they do on Facebook. In addition, users interact with posts eighteen times more often on Instagram than they do on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its huge user base, Instagram is increasingly popular among businesses and marketers. In October 2013, the company introduced advertising for select brands and opened it up to everyone a month later. In July 2016, the company rebranded and changed its logo. The platform also entered the Snapchat fray with its Instagram Stories, a feature that creates ephemeral content lasting only 24 hours. The change in the company&#8217;s business model means that it is competing with Snapchat for advertisers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impact_of_Instagram_on_teens_mental_health\"><\/span>Impact of Instagram on teens&#8217; mental health<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal reported this week that the photo-based social network Instagram can have negative effects on teens&#8217; mental health. While there are legitimate concerns about the site&#8217;s use and its effects on girls&#8217; body image, the report also found that teens reported increased anxiety and depression when using the platform. In fact, the Journal cited Facebook internal research that found that teenagers who used Instagram were more likely to experience depression and body image problems.<\/p>\n<p>Research from developmental psychologists shows that social media can affect adolescents&#8217; mental health. For example, teenagers who post pictures on Instagram tend to feel bad about themselves because everyone else seems to be so perfect. Teens may try to compensate for this negative self-image by sharing pictures that are unrealistically photo-shopped. But their social media identities don&#8217;t match their real feelings, which can make their anxiety worse. The pressures of peer approval can cause teens to take hundreds of photos, hoping to get as many likes as possible.
