The company has three billion monthly users across multiple services. It was the largest outage in the company&#8217;s history, blocking billions of users from their favorite social media sites. Users on Facebook and Instagram were also unable to use their messaging service, Facebook Messenger. In response, users spread memes about the outage on Twitter. The company later tweeted thanking users for their patience and for consuming all the memes they&#8217;d created this week.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that Instagram is experiencing technical difficulties. The service&#8217;s Down Detector page shows the site as partially down. Fortunately, no other services are affected by the outage, and Instagram was listed as partially down on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, this outage has led to a number of scammers taking advantage of the situation. The website Down Detector also reports that a fake Instagram support account is posing as the company&#8217;s customer service department.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facebooks_routers_went_wrong\"><\/span>Facebook&#8217;s routers went wrong<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Facebook users across the world were outraged Monday night when their social network was unavailable for six hours. The company blamed a configuration change on routers, which coordinate network traffic between the company&#8217;s data centers. The change cascaded throughout the entire company&#8217;s networks, causing the outage. It was not immediately clear what caused the problem, but experts believe it is a routine maintenance mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The outage began around 11:44 am EDT and spread to other services. The outage was felt around the world, with employees unable to log in to their systems. The Facebook outage came only days after multiple Wall Street Journal reports raised questions about the company&#8217;s ethics and practices. The Journal found that the company prioritized growth over user safety, gave privileged treatment to high-profile users and failed to disclose how Instagram impacted their users&#8217; mental health.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instagrams_direct_messaging_feature\"><\/span>Instagram&#8217;s direct messaging feature<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The direct messaging feature of Instagram has been down for about an hour, but the issue could be much worse than that. The platform is constantly undergoing upgrades, which can have unexpected consequences. One such upgrade took down DMs for large sections of the Instagram community. Instagram has yet to respond to the issue. However, users can use other methods to get in touch with their friends.
