Also read about their inspirations and journeys.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kevin_Systrom\"><\/span>Kevin Systrom<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to imagine how anyone could have missed the photograph that made Instagram famous: a couple in Mexico snapped an impromptu photo with their iPhone. The photo featured a dog sitting next to one foot in a flip-flop, a moment that is not unlike any other. Yet this photograph was taken by Kevin Systrom, one of the people who founded the social network. Now a billionaire, Systrom has left Instagram to join the board of Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>The two met at a tech conference in New York City and bonded over their passion for social media. Their shared values inspired them to work together to create the photo-sharing app. They both enjoyed working with celebrities, attended the Met Gala benefiting the Costume Institute, and even helped Pope Francis set up his Instagram account. But in 2018, Systrom and his co-founder, Jeff Krieger, announced their retirement from the company. It&#8217;s unclear if Systrom will work on the social media platform or focus on other endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for Instagram started in San Francisco, where Kevin Systrom worked for Nextstop, an app focused on location-based social networking. The two also had a background in web development. After the acquisition of Burbn by Google, Systrom continued to tweak the app and brought on programmer Mike Krieger to analyze data. They discovered that Burbn users were using the photo-sharing functions, posting pictures like mad. This would ultimately lead to the creation of Instagram.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mike_Krieger\"><\/span>Mike Krieger<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Michael Krieger is the co-founder of Instagram, and he helped build the first version of the app. Before launching Instagram, he worked on Meebo, a browser-based instant messaging application. During his time at Stanford, Krieger studied Symbolic Systems and Human-Computer Interaction, and he wrote his Master&#8217;s thesis on collaboration. Then, in 2011, Krieger joined Facebook&#8217;s engineering team.<\/p>\n<p>The two entrepreneurs were excited about the new camera capabilities in mobile phones. Together with their college friends, they began developing an app that would allow them to edit and share photos. As the app grew, they began to add new features, including hashtags, which make finding other users easier. With the help of hashtags, Instagram users can also search for people with common interests. While Krieger initially focused on the business side of the app, he envisioned it as a community for small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger co-founded Instagram. The pair spotted a gap in the market for a photo-sharing app and began developing the app with Kevin Systrom. In addition to developing the app, Krieger also served as the company&#8217;s Chief Technology Officer. Under Krieger&#8217;s leadership, Instagram went from a few million users to a billion users. His entrepreneurialism and technological expertise helped Instagram grow from a small company to a global phenomenon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mark_Zuckerberg\"><\/span>Mark Zuckerberg<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg created Instagram to help students at Harvard University share pictures, videos, and links. The site went live in June 2004, right from Zuckerberg&#8217;s dorm room. Today, Zuckerberg believes the future of social media lies in private encrypted communication, balancing privacy and safety. He says successful platforms will focus on securing data storage and communications across networks, while reducing post-installation permanence. This article will discuss why privacy is so important in social media.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s algorithms track every online move, every click, typed post, and name searched and unsearched. Because Facebook is able to scrutinize each decision made by its users, Zuckerberg allowed Instagram to launch ads. This meant that the network was valuable enough to support advertising. The ad network was necessary for Instagram to grow, but the social media giant waited to introduce it until it had some revenue. In 2015, Instagram reached a billion downloads and is now worth more than $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, whose company grew to over 500 million users in six years, was a prime candidate to acquire Instagram. At the time, Systrom had less than a dozen employees. Krieger ran the company&#8217;s technical operations, while Systrom focused on improving the product.
