Elon Musk has said he is confident he can double Twitter&#8217;s revenue by 2028, and expand it to a global audience of 931 million.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Elon_Musks_hostile_takeover_bid\"><\/span>Elon Musk&#8217;s hostile takeover bid<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Tesla Motors CEO has made a hostile takeover bid on Twitter. Musk, a billionaire tech investor, has a long history of criticizing the social media site&#8217;s moderation efforts and its decision to ban former US President Donald Trump from its platform. Despite Twitter&#8217;s controversies over free speech, Musk has steadily built up Twitter shares since January. But how would he proceed? Would Twitter be better off without Musk?<\/p>\n<p>Although he owns about 9% of Twitter&#8217;s stock, Elon Musk is competing to acquire the rest, or ninety-one percent. The billionaire has made the proposal based on the concept of &#8220;double-down equity,&#8221; a tactic used by public companies to avoid acquisition. The concept basically makes the target company more expensive, while simultaneously flooding the market with more discounted shares. While the SEC is aware of Musk&#8217;s bid, it is unlikely to be approved by the board.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Twitters_quarterly_revenue_declines\"><\/span>Twitter&#8217;s quarterly revenue declines<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The company&#8217;s first-quarter revenue declined by 8%, missing analysts&#8217; expectations. Advertising revenue fell 11% to $474 million, a smaller than expected decline. While this was a disappointment, it was a welcome sign that Twitter is still growing. Subscription revenues were up 8%, compared with an expected 5% decline. Revenue from licensing deals also increased, boosting the company&#8217;s cash balance. However, the company&#8217;s growth is expected to slow down a bit after the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>While Twitter&#8217;s quarterly revenue declined, the company&#8217;s profits were stronger than analysts&#8217; expectations. Its revenue per user increased 17 percent, despite its lagging advertising revenue. The company said it had made &#8220;meaningful progress&#8221; towards its goal of 315 million users and $7.5 billion in annual revenue. However, analysts&#8217; expectations were more optimistic.
