I had heard of the Atlantic Council as a clearinghouse of political and ideological propaganda, but I was unsure how I would feel about their partnership with Facebook. It seems that the Atlantic Council is now another ally of the US state apparatus, and this new collaboration with Facebook is a clear warning to the capitalist media. As the US military-intelligence apparatus tries to censor &#8220;fake news,&#8221; &#8220;election meddling,&#8221; and &#8220;disinformation&#8221; it is clear that social media monopolies are a part of this campaign. These monopolies have been used to censor political content, and the most vulnerable are socialist and anti-war views.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Atlantic_Council_is_a_clearinghouse_for_political_and_ideological_propaganda\"><\/span>Atlantic Council is a clearinghouse for political and ideological propaganda<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Atlantic Council has an impressive track record, as a nonprofit organization, of defending the strategic interests of US capitalism. It publishes a list of war-profiting defense contractors, agencies aligned with Washington, and Gulf Arab tyrants. Executives of the Atlantic Council are cut from the same cloth as the U.S. diplomatic services, and their political and ideological views mirror the U.S. government&#8217;s. In fact, the Atlantic Council is an important stop for foreign military brass, top diplomats, and heads of state visiting the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>While this announcement has been largely ignored by the capitalist press, it should be a warning for the rest of us to stay vigilant. The current campaign against &#8220;fake news&#8221; and &#8220;election meddling&#8221; &#8211; which has a long history of censorship on social media sites &#8211; is part of the US state apparatus. These efforts have a direct link to the Atlantic Council. The censorship of political content on social media is another example of the Atlantic Council&#8217;s collaboration with the military-intelligence apparatus. Facebook&#8217;s safety operations have also been coordinated with the Atlantic Council&#8217;s Digital and Forensic Research Lab, which has targeted anti-social content on the social media platform for more than a year.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facebooks_collaboration_with_the_Atlantic_Council_is_a_warning\"><\/span>Facebook&#8217;s collaboration with the Atlantic Council is a warning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The news that Facebook is collaborating with the Atlantic Council is not without alarm. The Atlantic Council is a group of imperialist powers, with leadership ranging from former U.S. military officers to senior figures in the U.S. National Security State. These groups are vested with political power and are increasingly threatened by the free flow of information on social media. Facebook&#8217;s recent scandals with &#8220;fake news&#8221; and Cambridge Analytica have forced the company to face falling stock values and new EU regulations.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear whether the Atlantic Council&#8217;s Digital Forensic Research Lab is collaborating with Facebook for the purposes of detecting fake news and disinformation. Despite Facebook&#8217;s efforts to combat fake news, it is unclear if Facebook truly intends to curtail the spread of disinformation on its platform. As for Facebook&#8217;s involvement with the Atlantic Council, Johnson says the new partnership should serve as a warning.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instant_Articles_are_a_step_towards_Internet_censorship\"><\/span>Instant Articles are a step towards Internet censorship<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Instant Articles on Facebook are an example of the new trend of distributed content, which many fear could lead to censorship in the future. Publishers negotiated a favorable deal with Facebook in exchange for user data. These data can be used to create coherent user profiles. Moreover, publishers can now use data from the Instant Articles to tailor the user experience to their needs. This trend is particularly troubling for the press.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that Facebook has made new tools available to publishers, including interactive maps, high-resolution photos, and videos automatically published on the platform. The two companies also agreed on a no-exclusivity policy, allowing partners to post content on their own platforms as well as their Facebook pages. While this plan has been welcomed by many publishers, some have expressed concerns that it may lead to a biased system and exclude smaller publishers. The company has hired Hardiman two years ago, after she led a push into subscription offerings and a journalism project. Facebook recently announced that it will give $4.5 million to local news publishers. Before joining Facebook, Hardiman spent nearly a decade at the New York Times.
