This app disrupts sleep and normal developmental tasks. Plus, it is psychologically addictive, and kids spend more time on it than on any other social media platform. Not only do kids have more time on it than anyone else, but they also don’t understand the concept of privacy. TikTok is especially risky for kids with mental health conditions. As Byrne uncovered, there’s a disproportionate number of suicide and self-harm content on the platform.

Dangerous content

While it is easy to forget how dangerous TikTok is for kids, the platform is still worth a look. Even if kids under the age of 13 can create profiles, they are exposed to inappropriate content, including pornography and other mature topics. In addition, children may be more likely to participate in illegal activity if they have access to TikTok. Parents should be aware of the risks this app poses to their children, and implement parental controls to keep their children safe.

Keeping your kids safe is important – fortunately, many apps are available that block the content children see on the site. However, parents must weigh the risks against the benefits to ensure their children are safe while on TikTok. Blocking the website from all home Internet devices is a good option if you don’t want your child to get in trouble. There are also apps available to block TikTok from mobile devices and desktops, such as CyberPurify Egg.

Easy access to sexual predators

Almost half of children who report online sexual encounters with predators say that they have blocked the same user in the future. These young people then contact these children again on another platform or through a different account. As a result, children can be victimized in several ways, including physical assault, sexual abuse, and robbery. The IWF also notes that online grooming is becoming a common practice, as children openly expose themselves to other users in exchange for attention. Hargreaves describes this phenomenon as a national crisis.

While TikTok claims that it only allows users to be 13 years old, young users still have access to an endless supply of sexual and adult language. These users don’t need to search long to find inappropriate content. Moreover, TikTok fails to delete videos showing children being abused by adults. This further normalizes child abuse and puts kids at risk of being victimized by sexual predators.

Misleading challenges

After reports surfacing of several misguided challenges, TikTok has responded to the problem in a few ways. First, the platform has added a new section to its Safety Center dedicated to challenges and hoaxes. Second, the company is making some changes to the warning labels that refer to suicide and self-harm. While it is too early to say exactly what changes the app will make, the changes will help to prevent further harm.

Another example of a misguiding challenge is the “chacha slide,” which shows a TikTok user attempting to catch a beer after dropping a basketball. The challenge isn’t very effective because the beer bottle breaks and splashes in the player’s face. Another example is the “skull-breaker” challenge, which was associated with numerous injuries last year. In addition, the Chacha slide challenge uses a song by DJ Casper that has no choreography at all.

Lack of policing

A study by the Thorn Foundation for Children found that half of U.S. minors use TikTok at least once a day. In one year, it removed nearly 86 million videos. Of those, half were removed for minor safety reasons. This lack of policing is particularly alarming given the number of child predators using TikTok to groom and exploit minors.

In response to this report, TikTok says it is committed to creating a safe environment for its users, and is working on a more robust anti-bullying policy. Despite a zero-tolerance policy for sexual exploitation, parents should still be cautious about the app’s uncensored, anonymous user account. If parents are worried, they can always report the videos.

The investigation is focused on the safety of children, which is why TikTok has been the focus of the investigation by multiple attorneys general in the U.S. Its algorithms are believed to promote self-harm and eating disorders. The investigation will examine how TikTok works and whether it violates state consumer protection laws. Whether TikTok is bad for kids will be determined by the outcome of the investigation.

Why is TikTok Bad For Kids?
