This incident prompted the families of two other children to file a lawsuit against TikTok, highlighting several of the issues related to the app, including its algorithm, the presence of minors in the app, and the addictive nature of the platform. TikTok, which denounces the blackout challenge, insists that it has found no traces of the challenge.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deaths\"><\/span>Deaths<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;blackout challenge&#8221; is a popular online activity where young people hold their breath until they pass out. A 12-year-old boy from Aurora, Colorado, died of asphyxia after attempting the challenge. He died 19 days later and was on life support. The boy&#8217;s family believes he choked on a shoelace while holding his breath. The blackout challenge is not the first dangerous challenge that has gone viral on TikTok. In fact, four other deaths have occurred since the blackout challenge became popular.<\/p>\n<p>A lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of two families in connection with deaths from the blackout challenge. These two girls died of asphyxiation after participating in the viral challenge. Their parents say that the blackout challenge has been a cause of their daughters&#8217; deaths, and they want the platform to be held accountable. This lawsuit is a first step toward helping the families get justice for their children.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Near-accidents\"><\/span>Near-accidents<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Known as the &#8220;pass-out challenge&#8221; or &#8220;the choking game,&#8221; the blackout challenge involves choking on something until you lose consciousness. It&#8217;s a popular viral trend that dates back to 2008, and even predates the rise of social media platforms like TikTok. Medical professionals have warned users to avoid participating in the challenge, as it can cause seizures, brain damage, and even death.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the blackout challenge has led to multiple deaths and near-accidents. Several recent reports of deaths and near-accidents during the challenge have caused TikTok to issue an official response. In fact, the company has even asked users to report videos promoting the challenge that could lead to such tragedies. One such report has resulted in the death of Joshua Haileyesus, who spent 19 days on life support after the challenge.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suicide\"><\/span>Suicide<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Blackout Challenge has claimed the life of more than one person. The most recent death was a 10-year-old in Italy. The originator of the game is unknown. However, the game has attracted widespread media attention. In addition to this case, three other youngsters were killed while playing the challenge. While the cause of these deaths is unknown, it is important to note that the Blackout Challenge is a potentially dangerous activity for children.<\/p>\n<p>The TikTok blackout challenge has been the cause of several child deaths. Advocates have called on the social media site to improve parental monitoring features and create mirror accounts. &#8220;We have a duty to protect our children from online threats,&#8221; says Dalia Hashad, counsel at the ParentsTogether organization. The video app has also been linked to other social media sites, including YouTube. In addition, it has become an important tool in the fight against suicide, as the trending Blackout challenge has been responsible for several children&#8217;s deaths.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cyberbullying\"><\/span>Cyberbullying<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The TikTok &#8220;blackout challenge&#8221; has become a controversial trend. In other words, it is a challenge where people deprive themselves of oxygen and then post videos of themselves doing it. The &#8220;blackout challenge&#8221; has been associated with numerous cases of cyberbullying, including deaths of teenagers who have participated in the challenge. The TikTok social network has been linked to other dangerous viral trends, including &#8220;dry-scooping&#8221; and &#8220;milk crates,&#8221; which have led to injuries. Recently, the &#8220;blackout challenge&#8221; was blamed for a 14-year-old boy who committed suicide. However, police sources claim that the two did not have any connection.<\/p>\n<p>Another recent TikTok challenge has involved the use of the hashtag #BackoutChallenge to post videos of students taking part in the challenge. Although TikTok has removed the videos of children who participated in the Blackout Challenge, some videos related to the &#8220;Slap a Teacher&#8221; challenge are still showing up on TikTok. However, these videos are from teachers who were warning students against participating in the challenge.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Product_design\"><\/span>Product design<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In a lawsuit filed in the U.S., the parents of two young girls are suing TikTok for the deaths of their daughters, Lalani Erika Walton and Arriani Jaileen Arroyo, after participating in the &#8220;Blackout Challenge&#8221; in 2021. TikTok denies supplying the videos to children, saying that the &#8220;Blackout Challenge&#8221; predates and was not a TikTok trend.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed after two children died from taking the &#8220;Blackout Challenge&#8221; on the video-sharing app. The parents of both children said that they became addicted to TikTok, and that the videos encouraged them to sneeze and choke themselves. The parents are suing TikTok for damages due to their children&#8217;s death, claiming that the &#8220;Blackout Challenge&#8221; has led to the deaths of many young people, and is not harmless.
