However, the perception of danger may cause US politicians to take action against ByteDance and TikTok. That&#8217;s why Carr said that he&#8217;s open to real solutions but he&#8217;s skeptical of TikTok&#8217;s promises.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Zhang was hired as the first software engineer for Kuxun, a digital travel booking startup. After a year, he led a team of forty to fifty people. Then, Zhang worked for Microsoft, and later, ByteDance. In 2012, TikTok was released to Chinese markets. Beijing has criticised India&#8217;s ban on the app, saying that it&#8217;s an example of &#8220;harassment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>ByteDance also owns Douyin, the Chinese counterpart of TikTok. Douyin has about 600 million daily active users. The company has a valuation of over $180 billion, and is headed by Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive. Liang Rubo will continue to be CEO, while Zhang will move into a new strategy role. The new CEO will also assume the chairmanship of the company.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beijing_Douyin_Information_Service_Limited\"><\/span>Beijing Douyin Information Service Limited<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The company has confirmed that Beijing Douyin Information Service Limited, the owner of TikTok, is a subsidiary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The move is an attempt to control the domestic technology sector. The company owns several domestic technology companies and ranks among the world&#8217;s most downloaded apps. However, there have been concerns about the company&#8217;s data protection policies. In a statement, TikTok says it takes reasonable precautions to protect user information.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these concerns, the company&#8217;s CEO said that the company was already in compliance with US data protection laws and had worked with two U.S. firms to lock down user data. The company is also working with Oracle and Booz Allen on a comprehensive data security project aimed at preventing data breaches and securing privacy. However, officials from the company have said that the Chinese government&#8217;s involvement does not change the company&#8217;s national-security assessment.<\/p>\n<p>The company is based in Beijing but has been operating in more than 150 countries, including the U.S. TikTok is banned in mainland China after it was ordered by the outgoing Trump administration to sell its U.S. arm to Walmart and Oracle. The Biden administration has suspended the deal in China after reviewing the company&#8217;s security risks.
