After distributing Facebook accounts to students in schools around the world, its popularity quickly skyrocketed, with over 7 million registered users by mid-2006. After creating the music-sharing application Synapse with a friend, he received several job offers, but declined. The offers came as a surprise to the teenager, who went on to attend Harvard instead. In some cases, the effects of Facebook are far more serious than the post itself.<\/p>\n<p>A new study by Stanford and N.Y.U. economists Hunt Allcott and Matthew Gentzkow examines how much Facebook use affects people&#8217;s lives. The researchers recruited more than 3,000 Facebook users who were aged 18 or older. The average number of hours they spent on Facebook per day was an hour, although heavy users could log two or three hours.
