Among other things, the platform allows people to interact over common interests, share educational content, and peacefully mobilize around social issues. It can also provide a connection to others during a crisis like a pandemic, or provide entertainment in a time of fear. However, some people worry that the platform is a dangerous distraction for their children and younger generations.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Attention_span\"><\/span>Attention span<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to a study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the average attention span has decreased from about 12 seconds in 2000 to less than eight seconds in 2013. While the effects of social media are unclear, some say that it&#8217;s a direct result of the way we consume information. For example, a video from TikTok that consists of a sea shanty may have zero impact on a person&#8217;s attention span, but a short video posted on the site can make a person forget to read a book or watch Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say TikTok could be damaging attention span. In a study published in the journal NeuroImage, researchers looked at the neurological effects of TikTok and the Chinese equivalent Douyin. They found that personalized videos activate reward centers in the brain, while random videos do not. Some users reported feeling addicted to the app, and had no self-control to stop watching. TikTok users may suffer from problems with attention, short-term memory, and concentration.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mental_health\"><\/span>Mental health<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many young people have begun to self-diagnose themselves with mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. This can be for many reasons, including the desire to fit in with their peers, rebelling, or even a preconceived notion of an illness. The attention and support received from a diagnosis or treatment can strengthen this idea. This phenomenon is known as the &#8220;horoscope effect,&#8221; whereby a person imitates a behavior or characteristic that they have not yet experienced. In TikTok, the effect is similar and can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being an unwholesome time-waster, TikTok has the potential to cause many children to develop mental illnesses. The app&#8217;s ad placements are close to videos of young people cutting themselves. Even worse, some videos have been found to include graphic images of violence. One such video was associated with an Apple Music ad. This video is not an isolated incident, and it is not the only case where TikTok has contributed to mental illness.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Body_image\"><\/span>Body image<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The popularity of TikTok has led to a variety of controversial trends. Among the most problematic trends are food-related videos, such as twinning with a foodie, and body-transforming &#8220;glow-up&#8221; videos. These videos reinforce unrealistic beauty standards and fail to promote self-love irrespective of appearance. Another trend, &#8220;Hip Walk,&#8221; idolizes a certain body type while bashing those who don&#8217;t fit the standard. It also makes users feel pressured to lose weight or have a specific body type.<\/p>\n<p>Another trend involving TikTok is the oversexualization of young people&#8217;s bodies. It has been noted for years that the oversexualization of children by media has a negative impact, especially for females. Many videos of children are based on the standards of beauty and sexuality portrayed by models, actors, and dancers. These videos may encourage disordered eating habits and body dysmorphia, which are both harmful for the developing body image.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cyberbullying\"><\/span>Cyberbullying<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Teens spend many hours online, including using social media sites to harass each other. Cyberbullying has been linked to an increase in suicide attempts among youth. Individuals 25 and younger who were victims of online bullying were 100 times more likely to attempt suicide. Whether or not the bullying is related to a social or physical problem is unknown. However, the effects of cyberbullying are severe and can negatively impact both victims and perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>Young users are more vulnerable to bullying because they are more easily manipulated by older users. If kids are exposed to this type of behavior at a young age, it may mentally scar them for life. Additionally, the exposure to such inappropriate content online can lead to unhealthy relationships.
