In fact, TikTok&#8217;s parent company, ByteDance, is based in China. Yet leaked audio from internal meetings at the company indicates that employees were accessing nonpublic data from US users for &#8220;project Texas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The incident involving TikTok&#8217;s data privacy concerns occurred in June 2022, when Chinese employees accessed American user data. While TikTok repeatedly assured users that their data would be safe, company documents showed that its public statements were misleading. Since then, no known breaches have occurred. However, the company is still under scrutiny, and its users should exercise caution. Ultimately, the question is whether TikTok&#8217;s data privacy practices will be affected.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safety_of_TikTok_for_young_people\"><\/span>Safety of TikTok for young people<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Parents should not become obsessive TikTok snoopers. But they should monitor their children&#8217;s TikTok accounts and look for red flags, especially when they see their kids posting embarrassing videos. After all, kids have been known to do some really stupid things on TikTok. The best way to keep tabs on your kids&#8217; accounts is to monitor them regularly.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most concerning risks of TikTok for young users is the risk of sexual predators. Some users may be unaware that they are being targeted by predators. Other users may be innocuous, but they may not be. The DM&#8217;s that TikTok users receive may include a picture of a person&#8217;s home. Some predators use this information to groom children. Those with poor hygiene or unguarded children should avoid these videos.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_collection\"><\/span>Data collection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The U.S. version of TikTok&#8217;s Privacy Policy has been updated to comply with stricter data protection laws. The EU version is largely similar, but still has some additional provisions for consumers. In addition to updating the privacy policy, TikTok added sections about e-commerce and Apple App Tracking Transparency. As an added bonus, TikTok has made changes to its privacy settings to address privacy concerns and ensure compliance with these laws.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent changes to data privacy laws have come with the implementation of the federal law known as Project Texas. It is aimed at limiting the flow of &#8220;protected&#8221; data to China. Despite the fact that TikTok&#8217;s internal efforts have been labeled &#8220;Project Texas,&#8221; data collected on US users has been made accessible to its Chinese subsidiaries. In response to these concerns, the company is redirecting pipes and attempting to limit the flow of &#8220;protected&#8221; data.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security_of_TikTok\"><\/span>Security of TikTok<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A letter from TikTok in response to questions from U.S. Senators sparked a furor. Although the company has repeatedly claimed all of its data is stored in the US, the company&#8217;s executives conceded that some of their China-based employees are able to access the data of U.S. users. The company said it has a robust security program and its executives are responsible for enforcing these policies.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s new data-security plan is aimed at limiting Chinese government access to U.S. user data. This new step is in response to growing concerns that Chinese government-affiliated entities could misuse user data. For example, Project Texas focuses on a slice of the US user database. But the company said it uses the Oracle cloud for training AI. TikTok also says it stores its data outside of China and makes backups in Singapore.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reporting_harmful_content_on_TikTok\"><\/span>Reporting harmful content on TikTok<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In an effort to curb content that could harm young children, TikTok recently rolled out new community guidelines. The guidelines expand on the existing topics and have been broken down into thirteen categories. Young users will no longer be able to post videos on FYP until they are 18 years old. In addition, TikTok has tightened its rules on sexual content. Content that is considered &#8220;overtly sexual&#8221; will no longer be recommended.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the social media platform is taking steps to protect users from the dangers of violence and exposure. TikTok has removed more than 102 million videos in Q1 2022. The company has also fact-checked 13,738 videos globally and added prompts to 5,600 videos.
