Moderators are people hired by TikTok to spot and remove content that breaches their guidelines. While most of them work remotely from their own homes, there are a few who are based in Japan. Here’s what they do. In short, they’re an extremely important part of the platform, and you can earn a lot doing it.

Moderators are paid to spot and remove content that breaches their rules

The lawsuit alleges that Facebook failed to provide safe working conditions for its content moderators, causing some of them to suffer from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit also alleges that TikTok should do more to protect its content moderators. The suit was filed on behalf of Ashley Velez and Reece Young, who are employees of TikTok.

As Facebook struggles with its content moderation, many of its moderators have moved to TikTok. The social network has millions of users, so it’s no wonder it needs such a large moderation staff. But the company isn’t in a position to comment on this issue, but ByteDance has been poaching employees from rivals. In fact, many Facebook moderators have quit to join TikTok.

Facebook is also exploring technical solutions to filter graphic material, including tools to blur the image. But in the meantime, there is a big problem: the site doesn’t have the tools to remove these videos quickly. I recently saw a video by a white man featuring an n-word. It wasn’t taken down immediately, but it has gotten nearly 90,000 views in four days. Nudity rules prevent depictions of female genitalia and nipples, though breastfeeding content is exempted.

They are based remotely

The social media service TikTok has employed hundreds of U.K.-based moderators since January 2021. While Facebook’s content moderation department outsources these jobs, TikTok has hired dozens of U.K. moderators from its rivals. Some of them have left Facebook after experiencing trauma because of videos containing disturbing content. Others say they’ve been subjected to surveillance and are overworked.

The company’s Nevada center began receiving more TikTok content in the spring of 2021, straining the company’s resources. In addition, employees had to tag more videos in 20 seconds. But they were rarely able to meet the 90% accuracy goal. Moreover, the number of videos increased rapidly, forcing moderators to use more resources. A remote work schedule and low pay have made it difficult for some to do the job well.

The pay and working conditions for moderators differ depending on where they work. Some are paid less than their equivalents in the US and Canada, while others have been paid more. Some have complained that they have faced mental trauma or exploitation as a result of their work. Some have reported better working conditions for TikTok moderators compared to those at Facebook and YouTube. These companies have also been accused of putting their employees at risk and denying them the benefits of a normal working environment.

They work for a social media management company

Many Facebook content moderators work for an outsourcing firm, such as Hays or Voxpro. The outsourcing firms provide the staff to moderate content on Facebook, while some leave the industry altogether. Interestingly, many of these people now work for TikTok. It is unclear whether their procedures differ from those at Facebook, but the company does require that its moderators have counselling and a 24-hour help hotline.

A lawsuit against TikTok follows a class-action lawsuit against Facebook last year. The plaintiffs won a $52 million settlement for the moderators. In that case, the social media giant settled similar claims. But the same law firm is representing Frazier and the company. The YouTube lawsuit was dismissed in July, as plaintiffs were able to fix the platform’s shortcomings.

They are a big job that requires lots of people

As a social media platform, TikTok has long relied on outsourcing firms to moderate their content. Many of these firms are accused of exploiting their workers. TikTok’s moderators are responsible for sifting through graphic violent content, which can range from hate speech to murder. Facebook and TikTok have huge moderation operations in Ireland. These companies have built “trust and safety hubs” to oversee their moderators.

The social media giant has recently been sued by two TikTok content moderators for their mental health and well-being. Similar lawsuits have also been filed against Facebook, who paid $52 million to two moderators who developed post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite its perks, moderation is a serious occupation with its share of challenges. The downsides of the job include working long hours without any breaks.

Do TikTok Moderators Get Paid?
