Using TikTok for homework assignments is a great way to teach students about the power of humour. Videos about relatable school situations can be shared on TikTok, which allows pupils to see the light side of situations that would otherwise seem ridiculous. The app is not without its negative side, however. In a recent study, a school in Wales found that mobile phones were linked to higher GCSE grades than those students who had no use for them.<\/p>\n<p>Although TikTok is labeled as &#8220;for adults,&#8221; it does have a dark side. Teens and adults have been accused of pornography, starvation diets, and other harmful behavior. The company has responded by banning content related to child sexual abuse. TikTok is a great way to connect with friends, but it also has a dark side. One Suffolk schoolgirl, Jasmine Morton, revealed that the site has been linked to bullying, vandalism, and self-harm.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_doesnt_have_end-to-end_encryption\"><\/span>It doesn&#8217;t have end-to-end encryption<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While TikTok does not have end-to-end encryption, it is a good idea to use it with caution. This video-sharing platform has a lot of nasty content. As a result, TikTok has been slow to put in protective measures against user data. When you first sign up, you&#8217;re asked for information like your name and email address. Avoid sharing this information with anyone, especially anonymous users.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok does not use end-to-end encryption, but it still collects information from users. The app does not monitor phone conversations. Instead, it asks permission before accessing audio. It doesn&#8217;t track phone calls, but does track user activities. Users can turn off the microphone in their phone settings. However, TikTok does collect data from underage users, including the audio files they upload.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_uses_browser_trackers\"><\/span>It uses browser trackers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chinese-owned TikTok is the latest app to come under fire for collecting data on its users. In July, Disconnect found references to servers in China in the app&#8217;s code. While the app&#8217;s code is a recent update, Disconnect executives say they find this code suspicious. It seems that the Chinese government is doing the same thing. As of this writing, TikTok has not commented on the new report.<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning behind the collection of user data on social media sites is questionable, however. While many apps claim to protect their users from malicious activity, this one is not. It collects other apps&#8217; data, location information, and network info. While TikTok claims to protect users&#8217; privacy, many users think the site is deliberately collecting personal data. As a result, many fear that TikTok is an invasive spyware disguised as a harmless social media app.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_has_been_exploited_by_sexual_predators\"><\/span>It has been exploited by sexual predators<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The social media site TikTok has been a hotbed for child sex abuse, with many young people blackmailed into sending videos and nude pictures. The app&#8217;s mechanics have also contributed to this problem, with many users using screenshot leaks and callout videos to combat the abuse. But social media giants are still failing to police the platform effectively, leading to a more informal system of combating the exploitation of children on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>The app has become so popular that the Department of Homeland Security has opened an investigation into its use by child predators. While the site&#8217;s moderators have struggled to keep up with the volume of videos, the privacy settings have been exploited by predators to target children. The rules direct moderators to remove videos about Tiananmen Square and Tibetan independence, among other topics. The Chinese government has also been accused of hacking the Equifax credit reporting agency in the U.S., and it&#8217;s easy to imagine that such information would be accessed and misused by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Although TikTok recently fixed the issue, the company has had a history of security issues. One recent issue involved a bug that allowed TikTok to access a user&#8217;s clipboard. A Check Point cybersecurity team has flagged issues with TikTok and other companies.
