Eventually, it evolved into a way to spread information in real-time. This article will examine the original purpose of Twitter, and show why it was such a success. It also discusses the challenges it faced along the way. Here are a few things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Twitter_was_created_by_programmers_at_podcasting_company_Odeo\"><\/span>Twitter was created by programmers at podcasting company Odeo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The founders of Twitter were two programmers working at the podcasting company Odeo. The first one, Noah Glass, presented the concept to the Odeo board during the summer of 2006. They barely blinked, but eventually decided to invest in the idea and buy back the company&#8217;s shares. Evan Williams later joined the Twitter board and quickly racked up hundreds of SMS bills to test out his idea.<\/p>\n<p>Evan Williams and Biz Stone had a startup called Odeo that would allow users to share podcasts and microblogs. After seeing the success of Facebook, they decided to start a podcasting service of their own. Evan and Biz Stone were former Googlers who were convinced by their idea. The venture did not last long, however, and Evan eventually sold the company to Google and launched Twitter as a standalone service.<\/p>\n<p>The company bought back Odeo and Noah Glass did not join the new company. However, a few months later, Twitter&#8217;s growth exploded. The company&#8217;s first conference, South By Southwest Interactive, saw a massive explosion of Twitter usage. Tweets could only be 140 characters long at the time. Eventually, the company changed the service&#8217;s policy to allow up to 280 characters.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_was_a_way_to_send_text_messages_across_platforms\"><\/span>It was a way to send text messages across platforms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When Twitter launched, it was geared toward SMS users, with a 140-character limit adapted to the size of text messages. It was intended to replace the need to text over a phone line. As more people got smartphones, SMS usage declined. But Twitter has stayed ahead of the curve, improving its mobile app and launching a new website. Twitter&#8217;s growth began during the South By Southwest Interactive conference, where it received 60,000 tweets in one day.
