Unlike the green “twtrr” logo, Grasser started from scratch to create this modern, colorful design. It draws heavily on mountain bluebirds and perfect circles. So, why is a bird in a Twitter logo? Let’s find out! Continue reading to discover more about this intriguing logo.

Grasser started from scratch on twitter’s logo

Grasser was approached by Jack Dorsey, who was looking for a logo for the popular social media site. After months of sketching and presenting 24 potential designs, Dorsey chose the circular logo that looks like a bird. The circle, Grasser says, represents democratization and giving people a voice. Twitter is a popular platform for people to share information, but it has unfortunately become a hellhole.

The Twitter logo began life as thick sans-serif letters. Later, the logo evolved into a bluebird symbolizing the concise nature of tweets. Today, the company’s logo takes the shape of a fluttering hummingbird. Grasser created Twitter’s current logo from scratch after studying dozens of bird species. Grasser spent many years developing the logo for Twitter, and he has a thriving portfolio of his work.

It’s brighter, cleaner, and more modern than the green “twtrr” logo

Twitter’s iconic blue bird is far more elegant than its former green “twtrr” logo. The bird, named Larry, symbolizes Twitter’s speedy delivery. The bird’s default profile picture is an egg, so users who don’t upload a custom picture are presented as unhatched birds. The bluebird evolved into its modern and elegant form in 2012, after Twitter decided to re-design the logo.

It’s based heavily on perfect circles

The Twitter logo has a lot of curves, but is based on perfect circles. The previous bird uses circular arcs, and had some irregular curves. But the new Twitter logo can be defined by two circles, making it a more unique company symbol than the old one. Here are some examples of perfect circles used in logos. You can use them in your own logo. And while the bird was an interesting symbol, you can’t take it as literally as you think.

Founded in 1999 in Los Angeles, California, A Perfect Circle features Billy Howerdel and Maynard James Keenan (guitarist of Tool). The band released four studio albums during the early 2000s: Mer de Noms in 2000, Thirteenth Step in 2003, and Emotive in 2004. However, after the release of Emotive, the band went on hiatus for a while and Maynard James Keenan joined Tool. Billy Howerdel, meanwhile, released the song “Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright” under the name Ashes Divide.

It’s based heavily on mountain bluebird

The Mountain bluebird, also called the Arctic bluebird, is an incredibly common North American bird. It’s a small, blue thrush with the most vibrant plumage of any North American bluebird. While male mountain bluebirds are completely blue, females are a mostly gray color with a bluish tint to the wing and tail feathers. Females also sometimes have pale orange across the breast. Both genders have similar song-making abilities and can mimic each other’s calls and songs.

While some Mountain Bluebirds migrate alone, they are most common in flocks of 50 to 200 birds. During the day, they travel at a slow, leisurely pace, stopping frequently to feed on weed seeds. You can even see these birds strung along barbed wire fences, searching for weed seeds. They are highly aggressive birds, sitting a meter or two apart and constantly flashing blue when they’re picking up tasty morsels.

Why the Bird in the Twitter Logo?
