While the judge was hesitant about the deal, he did rule that it was &#8220;significant&#8221; enough to make the class happy.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Class_action_settlement\"><\/span>Class action settlement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A US district court in California has approved a $90 million settlement in a class action lawsuit against Facebook, which alleges that it illegally tracks Facebook users across third-party websites, including those without a &#8220;Like&#8221; button. The class action claims that Facebook executives knew they were breaking federal privacy and wiretap laws when they tracked subscribers across the internet. A settlement with Facebook will provide relief for millions of users who were affected by the social network&#8217;s privacy practices.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook settlement agrees to make substantive changes in its workplace to minimize the psychological harm caused by routinely viewing objectionable content and conduct. The company has committed to establish a $52 million fund to provide ongoing mental health treatment for class members. More than 14,000 class members will receive checks. The Facebook settlement also involves a number of other changes at the social networking giant. These include ensuring that vendors provide on-site coaching from licensed clinicians and implementing standardized resiliency measures.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Damages_sought\"><\/span>Damages sought<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A recent court ruling has approved a $550 million settlement between Facebook and its users over claims the social media site collected biometric data without their permission. While this settlement is far from the largest in the history of the United States, it is notable considering that the company has already been fined $650 million in a separate case over violations of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The final details aren&#8217;t yet available, but the terms of the settlement will most likely be divided into several smaller payouts. This settlement covers any Facebook user who has a public profile and anyone who has visited websites that have embedded Like buttons on them. The list includes major corporate brands, including the likes of Google, Apple, and Microsoft. The lawsuit was filed after Facebook&#8217;s user base nearly doubled from 489 million in 2010 to 739 million users in 2011. Ultimately, the company will have to delete the information of anyone who has accessed such websites.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Class_of_Illinois_Facebook_users_affected\"><\/span>Class of Illinois Facebook users affected<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A judge has approved a class-action lawsuit settlement that will award $650 million to more than one million Facebook users. The lawsuit was filed in 2015 after three residents of Illinois sued the company for violating their privacy by using facial recognition technology to suggest tags. While facial recognition technology uses a unique set of features to identify users, it also violates Illinois&#8217; Biometric Information Privacy Act. This law prohibits companies from using such biometric information without the user&#8217;s consent.<\/p>\n<p>The Settlement includes all of the claims asserted by the Plaintiffs. The Settlement also provides for a payment of up to $52 million for medical screenings and general damages related to exposure to potentially traumatic materials. Class Members may also seek additional payments for other qualifying diagnoses. In addition, Facebook has agreed to implement significant workplace reforms, including mandatory on-site coaching and standardized resiliency measures. These improvements will help protect Class Members&#8217; privacy and safety, as well as increase the likelihood of their families&#8217; safety and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Class_action_settlement_amount\"><\/span>Class action settlement amount<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The class action lawsuit against Facebook was initially filed in Illinois but later moved to the U.S. District Court for Northern California after the federal court denied Facebook&#8217;s motions to dismiss the case. The court certified the Illinois class action and Facebook attempted to appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, but was denied. Facebook finally agreed to settle the lawsuit and pay $650 million to the class representatives. Several lawsuits filed by other users have failed to obtain a fair settlement, but this one was the most recent.<\/p>\n<p>To receive a payout, you must have an active Facebook account. The deadline to submit a claim is Sept. 22 at 11:59 p.m. (EST) but you can still file a claim if you meet the eligibility requirements.
