In presenting the news as if it were legit, these scammers took advantage of a new grant program by Facebook, which is actually a $100 million grant for newsrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The website for the newsrooms program looks like a website from Mercy Corps, a nonprofit organization that helps victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters. It&#8217;s full of fake news stories, and all of the links on the website don&#8217;t work. Moreover, the job announcement for the Facebook Grant CEO doesn&#8217;t even work! Scammers use all sorts of tricks to lure victims, and increasingly, they use social media, such as Facebook, to reach out to people. One consumer lost hundreds of dollars after answering a Facebook scammer&#8217;s request for personal information.<\/p>\n<p>The Better Business Bureau recently released an alert about a new scam on Facebook. Scammers are trying to make victims believe that they&#8217;ve received a grant from the Facebook government to help victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. This scam involves Facebook Messenger chats, direct messages, and phone calls, and involves people claiming to have already received thousands of dollars in a Facebook grant.<\/p>\n<p>Another Facebook grant scam involved a woman who received tens of thousands of dollars and was asked to pay a $400 delivery fee in bitcoin. Fortunately, she soon discovered her account had been hacked and that she had been duped. Scammers typically advertise &#8220;free grants&#8221; in classified ads, call people who claim to have won them, or send official-looking mailers claiming to have won the grant.
