Initially hosting pirated content, they quickly developed into full-fledged internet companies by tapping into the enormous netizen audience in China. Their emergence on the international stage prompted them to create local shows and list on the US stock market. While their content has become more mainstream, the Chinese equivalents still host daily life videos and crazy antics by Chinese netizens. In addition to entertainment content, you will also find opinion and DIY videos.

BILI

BILI is the Chinese version of YouTube. Its audience is primarily younger and engaged. The strategy is similar to Tiktok, and a commitment to continuous feeds is required before opening a Bilibili account. The site is also able to stream live content. Despite this, there are still a few key differences between the Chinese and Western versions of YouTube. Let’s examine some of the differences.

Bilibili is a video sharing website based in Shanghai. It offers a variety of categories, ranging from movies and TV shows to science, entertainment, and daily life. Videos can be uploaded by users, and users can add comments. The website uses an HTML5 player and a scrolling commenting system known as danmu. The site has grown dramatically since its launch in mid-2010, with its monthly active user base now reaching 130 million. Its commercialization capabilities are also improving, with 8.8 million paid users.

Xigua

The Chinese version of YouTube is rapidly expanding its user base, and it recently announced two new plans to help Chinese users upload content in higher quality. The “Free 4K Plan” allows users to upload videos in 4K resolution for free, and the “Live Words Plan” puts RMB 200 million ($28 million) aside for creators. These plans have already attracted more than 8,000 participants. Xigua also has original content, such as clips from top television shows. It also partners with several major satellite networks to post clips from their most popular shows.

Xigua Video places an emphasis on user-uploaded short videos, and is one of the largest video platforms in China. It is a part of the media aggregator Jinri Toutiao, which is run by Beijing ByteDance Technology Co Ltd. It is estimated to be the largest short video sharing site in China. Xigua Video is able to attract over 120 million users daily, and users may not be able to judge the quality of content without knowing how it was made.

Youku Tudou

Alibaba has announced that it has purchased Youku Tudou and plans to grow it into one of the most popular video sharing sites in China. Alibaba plans to build its digital products around Youku Tudou, which already has 374 million monthly active users. The company has increased its budget for original content in recent years, and has partnered with copyright holders to place advertisements within online videos. Ultimately, the move to monetize user-generated content will help both sites stay profitable.

Alibaba has also invested billions of yuan in Youku over the last two years to buy copyrights for videos. The deal may not be a good move for the video channel brand’s bottom line, but it could help Alibaba gain access to a more diverse media ecosystem. As a result, Alibaba may be willing to promote its own content as a way to secure content exclusivity and build brand loyalty among Chinese consumers.

Youku Spaces

Youku, the Chinese version of YouTube, is arguably the most popular video platform in China. The site boasts 23.6 billion monthly views and 580 million unique visitors. Sixty percent of all Youku users are under the age of thirty. Last year, Alibaba acquired Youku in a $3.5 billion deal. In the years since, the Chinese version of YouTube has grown significantly. Adding Youku Spaces to its offerings is the latest sign of the company’s growing popularity and ambitions.

Youku, which is owned by Alibaba, has been lagging behind rivals Tencent and Baidu in terms of monthly subscribers. The Chinese company has stepped up its investment in original content and is trying to increase its user base. However, the Chinese firm has never made a profit according to traditional accounting measures. In the third quarter of 2018, its losses widened to 342 million yuan, compared to 152.3 million yuan in the same period in 2014.

SoHu Video

SoHu Video is owned by Sohu, China’s leading online portal. It’s best known for its high-quality content, including international television shows and reality shows. Since it launched in 2014, it has spawned many new channels, including Saturday Night Live, Rising Star, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. According to its data, nearly 40 percent of its users have college degrees, higher than most other mainstream video platforms in China.

You can access YouTube in mainland China if you have an account with Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. SoHu Video offers the same videos and content as YouTube, but is hosted on mainland China servers. SoHu is the best way to watch Chinese videos. Simply sign up, download the PureVPN software, and choose a mainland China server. Be sure to enable your VPN and clear your browser’s cookies before streaming a video.

What is the Chinese Version of YouTube?
