Haugen also testified before a Senate subcommittee in October, accusing Meta of making Instagram more addictive for teenagers. Following Haugen&#8217;s testimony, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced the new parental controls. Previously, parents had to invite their teen to start the parental supervision tools. Now, parents can see who their teens follow and what topics they like.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Observing_your_childs_Instagram_usage\"><\/span>Observing your child&#8217;s Instagram usage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Observing your child&#8217;s Instagram usage can be an important part of your relationship with your teen. Although you&#8217;re unlikely to be able to physically check in on your child&#8217;s phone all the time, you can use an app to monitor up to 5 accounts at once. Keeping an eye on your child&#8217;s social media presence is an important part of teaching your teen healthy social interactions and giving you a tool to connect with your teen as they get older.<\/p>\n<p>Observing your child&#8217;s Instagram usage isn&#8217;t difficult &#8211; all you have to do is to get the login information for their accounts and do spot checks every now and then. Third-party apps make it even easier. They allow you to monitor your child&#8217;s Instagram usage, as well as the activity of their friends. You can use these apps to keep tabs on your child&#8217;s social media accounts and prevent them from sharing inappropriate material.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cyberbullying_and_online_trolling_on_Instagram\"><\/span>Cyberbullying and online trolling on Instagram<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the biggest problems kids face when using the internet is cyberbullying. It&#8217;s no different for 11-year-olds. There are many ways to protect your child from cyberbullies, including logging out of social media accounts, closing tabs, and keeping private information private. If you see something suspicious, contact the authorities and keep copies of evidence. Also, do not let your child share too much personal information online, including their last name and school address. The more personal information a child gives out online, the easier it is for cyberbullies to target them.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to social networking sites, kids are also exposed to cyberbullying. More than 40% of kids have experienced some form of cyberbullying, and over 39% of US youths say they have experienced it. While Facebook and Snapchat have also seen an increase in this type of harassment, they only account for ten percent of cyberbullying. Unfortunately, this does not mean that all of these platforms are to blame for this growing issue. More social media platforms are allowing children and teens to post their private information and make their lives more miserable.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Limiting_interactions_with_inappropriate_users\"><\/span>Limiting interactions with inappropriate users<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Parents should limit their child&#8217;s interaction with inappropriate users on social media, including Instagram. These social media apps can devolve into a cesspool of insulting messages and malicious comments, which can quickly turn into cyberbullying. Luckily, Instagram has features that can keep your child safe. For example, you can turn off the &#8220;Unfriend&#8221; feature to prevent unwanted messages. If you&#8217;re unsure how to do that, try creating a new account.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure your child has a safe account by blocking accounts belonging to adults. Instagram also introduced safety notices for users who interact with children. These notices will notify young people when adults engage in inappropriate behavior. However, if your child encounters an account belonging to someone who is eleven years old, it&#8217;s better to limit their interaction with that user.
