This incredibly exciting week-long process involves students choosing a sorority, presenting themselves to the sorority, and finally accepting an offer to join on the day of the sorority&#8217;s &#8216;bid day&#8217; (Sunday 15 August this year).<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of sorority recruitment videos has been driven by the fact that sorority pledge videos were featured in the &#8220;For You&#8221; tab in the TikTok app. While this baffling trend confused some users, others were fascinated by the content. The videos are not only entertaining, but they also offer a chance to immerse oneself in the Southern niche culture.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Videos_show_first-year_college_students_preparing_for_recruitment_events\"><\/span>Videos show first-year college students preparing for recruitment events<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Embark on a career in engineering by participating in one of the many recruiting events offered by universities. At Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, students and recruiters prepare for the event by attending the Cook Out on the Quad, where 10 to 15 companies work with first-year college students to prepare resumes and attend recruiting events. Some are eager to join the coveted sororities while others are more interested in the status contest and fashion show. Regardless of their motivations, they all provide a unique perspective on the sorority recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers found that social media was inherently voyeuristic, so RushTok&#8217;s virality was highly correlated with the appearance of thin, white women. The videos have also fueled debate about the meaning of #RushTok, which is an acronym for rush-to-kick.<\/p>\n<p>Those familiar with RushTok may have noticed the many posts featuring white, homogeneous women. This was no surprise, considering the TikTok algorithm is biased towards this demographic. While these videos can provide an entertaining glimpse into a niche world, they are often panned by a number of people for being too homogenous or lacking in talent.
