According to a Pew Research study published in March 2021, the average user of TikTok is a female, with 61 percent of users being female. Men, meanwhile, make up only 39% of TikTok users. The study, however, did not include users younger than 18, so it is impossible to know the number of people under 18 who use TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>As of September 2017, Facebook and TikTok were the most popular news sources among Americans, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine changed this. There were 6.4 billion #Ukraine-tagged posts on Feb. 20; that number is now over 40 billion. In March, the White House briefed 30 top app influencers about the war. This data is encouraging for both Facebook and TikTok.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pew_Internet\"><\/span>Pew Internet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Pew Internet Survey of how many users on TikTok has found that the site has become one of the most popular apps in households. Users who make more than $75,000 monthly are 20% more likely to use TikTok than non-users. The affluent demographic of TikTok users makes it an ideal place for high-profile global campaigns. This is not the only positive trend to come from the site.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok is not without controversy. The app&#8217;s privacy has drawn controversy, with many users concerned about their personal data being shared with third parties. A recent study published by WhistleOut found that 58% of US users fear that TikTok is spying on them. In addition, nearly three-quarters of the top-performing videos on the site feature music. Before the recent update, users could only record videos for 60 seconds. But, in July of 2021, that restriction was lifted and videos could now be as long as 3 minutes and 10 minutes. In October, TikTok reported that longer videos had received five billion views globally. Currently, longer videos are the most popular type of videos on TikTok in Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan, and US users seem to be the most interested in them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"App_Store\"><\/span>App Store<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sensor Tower&#8217;s latest store intelligence data reveals that TikTok is the most popular download worldwide. In Q1 of 2022, the video sharing app overtook Instagram to become the most downloaded app on the App Store. The app was downloaded over 70 million times worldwide in Q1 of 2022, which was the highest quarter-over-quarter growth since it launched in 2015. Despite a ban in India and the US in June 2020, TikTok&#8217;s downloads across all app stores in Asia increased by 11%.<\/p>\n<p>As for the number of users downloading the TikTok app on the App Store, the highest percentages were seen in the Arab world. According to Google App Store data, 18% of users claim to be from lower-income households, but those figures are only based on adults over 18 years old. Hence, a lot of lower-income households may be student flats. Additionally, WeAreSocial&#8217;s research has shown that TikTok users in the region are significantly more female than male. The gender balance of users on TikTok is most pronounced in Indonesia and the Philippines, where females make up 68.6% and 69.8% respectively.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Monthly_active_users\"><\/span>Monthly active users<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As of December 2018, TikTok has more than one billion monthly active users globally. However, that figure is growing at an incredible pace. As of Q4 2018, only about seven percent of TikTok users were younger than the age of 18. This means that the app has yet to hit the millennial demographic. In fact, it is likely that its user base will surpass one billion users by 2021. However, the exact number of TikTok users will be difficult to pin down until the company starts releasing new features.<\/p>\n<p>While TikTok may not have the numbers to back up the claims of its growth potential, it has already surpassed one billion monthly active users. It also boasts more than one billion video views every month. This is great news for users and developers alike. Its rapid growth is largely due to its high level of popularity. While older people may assume that TikTok is a fad that only affects pre-teens, the fact is that it has made a huge impact on the lives of teenagers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gen_Z_penetration\"><\/span>Gen Z penetration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The media is smitten with Gen Z, but the true number of users isn&#8217;t as large as what is reported. A recent YouGov survey shows that the number of Gen Z users using social media is actually much higher than that. And while the growth of TikTok is still relatively small compared to Snapchat, it is gaining on the likes of the&#8217;mom&#8217; demographic.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok is gaining on YouTube, but the two social networks are competing for the same users. YouTube is the leading social media platform for Generation Y and Gen Z, but TikTok is catching up fast. According to eMarketer, two-thirds of this group watches YouTube each month, whereas 60 percent of the Gen Z population logs on to TikTok each month.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Douyins_threat_to_TikTok\"><\/span>Douyin&#8217;s threat to TikTok<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been paying attention to the social media scene, you&#8217;ve probably noticed that both Douyin and its western counterpart, Twitter, have become enormous forces. Originally, they were just startups, but they have now grown into giants in their own right, with features ranging from three-tap purchases to virtual tours of cities and coupons for local businesses. Meanwhile, a marketing company&#8217;s head is now working with Douyin influencers to boost the social media platform&#8217;s influence. While the company may not be as big as Twitter or Facebook, its growth is still a strong indicator that it has a bright future.<\/p>\n<p>While neither app acts like malware, they do collect user information. Both apps send device MAC addresses to their servers and other Chinese companies. Moreover, the data they collect may be used to influence content to favor Chinese companies. Although both apps collect user information, Douyin&#8217;s code contains many unusual features and is susceptible to silent background updates.
