But the change has been implemented across all platforms. While a short message on Twitter has a limit of 140 characters, a long message on Twitter can be up to 10,000 characters. In fact, Twitter has more room than your email inbox. Moreover, Twitter&#8217;s DMs are far more private than your tweets.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the limitations, Twitter is still working on ways to improve its DMs. It has restored the ability to send links, introduced group messaging, and started allowing users to share tweets natively in messages. While these changes won&#8217;t completely overhaul the DM experience, they will make it easier for brands to communicate with consumers in a more efficient way. And, the new DM refinements are coming to iOS today, and quick scroll will soon be coming to Android.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Privacy_settings_for_a_DM\"><\/span>Privacy settings for a DM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can use privacy settings to limit who can send you DMs. You can turn off this restriction if you want to receive messages from only those people who follow you. This feature is great for sensitive customer support situations, but you should consider setting up a separate handle to respond to customer complaints. Here&#8217;s how to change this setting in Twitter. You should enable the first option if you want to avoid spam messages.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve enabled the DM setting, you&#8217;ll need to change your Twitter password and sign into your account. Once you&#8217;ve signed in, click on the security and privacy section in the left-hand menu. From there, you&#8217;ll need to choose the DM setting. By default, your Twitter password is your account name. Enter a new password when prompted. If you don&#8217;t want anyone to know your password, change it as well.<\/p>\n<p>Another important privacy setting is to choose whether to let the people you follow see your DM. By default, Twitter displays the DMs sent to you only to your followers, so you may want to check this before sending them. But if you don&#8217;t know who you&#8217;re talking to, you should make sure you enable a DM filter to filter out low-quality messages. If the person you&#8217;re chatting with doesn&#8217;t follow you back, the DM filter will detect that and will send you a message that doesn&#8217;t belong in their account.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sending_a_DM_to_a_user_you_dont_follow\"><\/span>Sending a DM to a user you don&#8217;t follow<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Twitter is trying to combat harassment on its platform by adding more controls to users&#8217; DMs and adding more ways to report abusive tweets. One of the latest updates is the option to accept a DM from a user you don&#8217;t follow. The user who receives the DM won&#8217;t know whether they&#8217;ve seen it until they accept it. So, when you want to send someone a message, consider sending it in a group.<\/p>\n<p>To send a DM to a user you do not follow, open up a new message window and type in the name of the person you&#8217;d like to contact. Select Next to see the previous messages that have been sent by that person. Type your message and hit Send. Once the recipient replies, you can delete the message. You can send a DM again if you wish to continue the conversation through email.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter is testing a new feature for DMs called &#8220;bios.&#8221; This will allow users to view bios, including how many people follow them, and their date of joining. Facebook has also started experimenting with DM bios and now highlights people with a large following. But if you&#8217;re unsure about whether or not you should send a DM, don&#8217;t.
