This is a good sign for both companies. But it&#8217;s not clear who is better for Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition of Instagram kicked off a massive buying spree. Back then, Facebook was smaller and facing stiff competition from Twitter and Google&#8217;s new social network. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook&#8217;s acquisitions to see if they stifle competition. For example, Facebook paid $19 billion for the messaging service WhatsApp, and it also announced plans to acquire CRTL-labs, a startup developing mind control technology.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Elon_Musk\"><\/span>Elon Musk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been following tech news, you&#8217;ve probably heard that Elon Musk owns Twitter and Instagram. The rumor started with a YouTube video, &#8220;Elon Musk bought Instagram for $44 billion.&#8221; While the video doesn&#8217;t specifically say that Musk owns these companies, it does seem to support this theory. Here are some facts about the company that Musk owns. It is important to note that Musk is the biggest shareholder in both.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being an entrepreneur, Elon Musk has been married twice, once to Jen Lewin and once to Christiana Wyly. He married both women for the same reason &#8211; they were both successful. The second marriage brought him fame and a lot of money. In 2018, Musk married Christiana Wyly, an environmental activist and the daughter of billionaire Sam Wyly. Musk&#8217;s mother, Tosca, was a model for over 50 years and has appeared in several ad campaigns for fashion brands and magazines.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kevin_Systrom\"><\/span>Kevin Systrom<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The founder of Twitter and Instagram, Kevin Systrom, is a Harvard graduate and currently resides in California. He was born in Holliston, Massachusetts. He developed an interest in computers during his school days and used to prank his friends by hacking their AOL accounts. In addition, he wanted to become a Disc Jockey and often pestered the Boston Beat record store, where he was eventually given a part-time job for a couple of hours a week.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram&#8217;s popularity helped it quickly attract funding and user numbers. Founder Kevin Systrom wanted to keep the service independent and discourage any collaboration with Facebook. In April 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion. The company retained its independence but allowed Facebook to take a hands-off approach to its operations. Systrom continued to lead the company despite the acquisition and contributed to the development of filters and the Explore tab. He created the X-Pro II filter during the prototyping phase of Burbn.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jack_Dorsey\"><\/span>Jack Dorsey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If Twitter and Instagram are the crowning glory of awful social media habits, then Twitter is probably the worst. It was the origin of the cancel culture, has suffered from a lack of staff support and bullying, and has seen its fair share of problems. Twitter, though, has a dedicated core user base and ambitious plans for the future. Despite the difficulties, Dorsey has been able to build a decent following. In the wake of Instagram&#8217;s downfall, people started flocking to Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was Dorsey&#8217;s initial investment in Instagram that led to its acquisition by Facebook. The two entrepreneurs had collaborated at Odeo, and had a common interest in text messaging and photography. They became close friends, and later joined forces and formed the company Twitter. Twitter later acquired Instagram, and Facebook eventually bought the social network, mostly for its mobile features. Instagram, however, had a much higher user base and a larger market share.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Square_CEO_Jack_Dorsey\"><\/span>Square CEO Jack Dorsey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Square CEO Jack Dorsey is stepping down as CEO of Twitter. The company announced that Parag Agrawal will take over as CEO on Nov. 29. Dorsey resigned from his position last year, calling the situation &#8220;severely limiting.&#8221; He served as Twitter&#8217;s CEO from 2006 to 2008. He returned to Twitter management in 2015 after an attack on the Capitol. He will serve on Twitter&#8217;s board until the 2022 annual shareholder meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Square CEO Jack Dorsey owns Instagram and Twitter and is heavily invested in cryptocurrency. Square holds about 5% of its cash reserves in bitcoin. The company last bought $170 million in bitcoin in February 2021. It is developing a Bitcoin-based decentralized finance system, and has even proposed building a bitcoin mining system. The company isn&#8217;t sure what its future will hold, but it&#8217;s certainly on the right path.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mark_Zuckerberg\"><\/span>Mark Zuckerberg<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been in the spotlight lately. A year ago, Facebook&#8217;s stock price topped $1 trillion. Now, the social media giant is worth only about half that. Facebook is slashing spending on long-term bets and waiting to see if Reels can win over advertisers. However, the market is not exactly in the mood for experiments, and inflation is forcing cutbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg owns Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. According to Biz Stone, Zuckerberg offered $500 million for Twitter in 2008. Mark Zuckerberg also owns 94 other companies, including Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Facebook. The price tag of 94 companies may not be as impressive, but it is still a record.
