During a panel discussion with fellow podcaster Jason Calacanis, Musk mentioned a popular Chinese app called WeChat, which combines messaging and social media with other features. Elon Musk also compared Twitter to WeChat, a super app in China that combines messaging and mobile payments with other features.<\/p>\n<p>While Musk has not yet decided whether he will buy Twitter, speculation is rife as to what he wants to accomplish with the platform. Various analysts have pointed to Musk&#8217;s previous praise of WeChat. The Chinese social network combines messaging, social media, and payments in one app, so that revenue generated from users will outstrip costs. But the most interesting question is why Elon Musk wants to make Twitter more like WeChat, a Chinese social media platform with hundreds of millions of users.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, WeChat has more than 1.288 billion active users in China, and is owned by Tencent, one of China&#8217;s most valuable tech companies. Tencent has a reputation for active censorship of politically sensitive content and posts that violate positive social values. Musk is also criticized for his autocratic leadership style, but his vision is widely lauded by fans. The social network is a unique phenomenon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Musk_wants_to_monetize_users\"><\/span>Musk wants to monetize users<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently purchased Twitter for a reported $44 billion and has been trying to figure out how to make it more profitable. Earlier this month, Musk told banks that he may monetize Twitter by slashing executive salaries, offering users a cheaper way to subscribe to the service, and even banning advertisements. He also suggested that users pay using Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that&#8217;s very popular on the site.<\/p>\n<p>While he&#8217;s still hesitant about the idea of charging for subscriptions, Musk does support making Twitter more valuable. He also suggested banning advertising, reducing the premium price for Twitter Blue, and offering users an option to pay with cryptocurrency dogecoin. Those suggestions could help the service remain free while enabling it to grow its audience. However, the CEO&#8217;s comments are hardly encouraging for users.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to cutting costs, he said Twitter may offer a new premium service that will let people pay to view tweets. Musk also said that Twitter would offer &#8220;premium&#8221; features like embedding verified users&#8217; content or quote-tweeting. Musk also hinted that he might try to monetize Twitter Blue by offering a checkmark that verifies users. In response, Twitter&#8217;s CEO, Parag Agrawal, addressed Musk&#8217;s concern. &#8220;We are aware that there are many fake accounts on Twitter. That&#8217;s unfortunate,&#8221; Agrawal wrote. &#8220;But we need to make sure that we don&#8217;t let these fake accounts affect the way we advertise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Musk has threatened to withdraw from his $44 billion Twitter acquisition because he is concerned about the amount of spam and automated bot accounts. Fake accounts are a huge problem for Twitter because they affect the way the company tracks its users. Besides spam, Twitter also shows ads to its monetizable daily active users. In its most recent quarterly report, the company reported revenues of $1.2 billion, with $1.11 billion in ad revenue. However, the company says that it has an operating loss of $128 million.<\/p>\n<p>A recent tweet by Musk, who owns Tesla, has further tarnished his business. The tweet supposedly claimed Musk had funding to take Tesla private, but was later found to be false. The move comes amid a lot of internal turmoil at Twitter. CEO Agrawal announced a hiring freeze and major cuts to expenses, while two top executives have already departed.
