These messages are freely visible to anyone who wants to read them. Twitter is seeing exponential growth as a user base, with more than 200 million registered accounts and growing every month. In July 2012, Twitter had a little over one hundred million users and just over half a billion registered accounts. This represents an increase of 17% over the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>As of January 2009, there were two million daily tweets sent by Twitter users. By October of last year, that number rose to 65 million per day. Despite this growth, Twitter has struggled to monetize its service. It launched promoted tweets last year, which display a list of recent trending topics. Most recently, Twitter bought TweetDeck, a tool for simultaneously accessing multiple accounts. Twitter also partnered with photo-hosting service TwitPic, and is now able to display images on its site.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Age_range\"><\/span>Age range<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the current study, the authors used the Age Range of Twitter Users (ARU) as a measure of the demographics of the social network. According to Anton Gonsalves of InformationWeek, 14 percent of Twitter users are under the age of 18 and 4 percent are over 65 years old. Hispanic and minority internet users were found to be twice as likely as white users to use Twitter. Age ranges of Twitter users were also determined by examining birthday tweets.<\/p>\n<p>The age range of Twitter users is diverse, ranging from 18 to 66 years old. In the US, more male users (66%) than females (34% to 25%). In the UK, the median age of Twitter users is thirty-five years old, while the median age is forty. The US population is divided into age groups of 18 to 29 years old and 50 years and over, with 7% of the adult population over the age of 65.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spending_power\"><\/span>Spending power<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While the Millennial generation is known for being the most wired in generation, their influence over the consumer&#8217;s spending is just as strong. With $1 trillion in spending power, this group is the next big thing in consumer goods. Millennials are the up and coming moneymakers of the world, and they&#8217;re on Twitter like the rest of us. With this in mind, it&#8217;s no surprise that 80% of Twitter users are Millennials. In fact, Millennials make up 13.9% of the world&#8217;s population.<\/p>\n<p>While Facebook has the most conservative demographic, Twitter has a remarkably Democrat audience. More than half (58%) of its audience is a Democrat. That means that the majority of Twitter users are Democrats, while only about 20% are Republicans. Twitter users have higher spending power than other social media users. In fact, they are expected to spend more time on the platform in 2022 than they did in 2017.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Market_valuation\"><\/span>Market valuation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In order to determine the value of a tweet, investors can use a tool like Tweet Binder. The tool calculates economic market value based on how many people retweet and like a tweet. In general, a tweet with a lot of retweets and likes is worth more than one with a small number of retweets and fewer likes.<\/p>\n<p>The engagement economic value of a tweet is a revolutionary metric that takes several factors into consideration. This value will determine the real price that a tweet is worth, and it is common for it to be lower than the market value. Companies with low engagement should improve their content. Otherwise, their engagement economic value will likely remain lower than the market value. This is a warning sign for companies to improve their content.
