Regardless of the issue, the company must do something about it, and soon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Facebook\"><\/span>Facebook<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that the recent outage of Facebook is an unfortunate turn of events. The social media giant spent billions of dollars developing its internal security and infrastructure, spinning up huge data centers across the country. But despite that, it&#8217;s unclear whether it&#8217;s the result of an internal error or a larger problem. Regardless of the cause, Facebook is facing a difficult time integrating the technical infrastructure of its three major services: Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instagram\"><\/span>Instagram<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Following Monday&#8217;s outage of Facebook, Instagram has started testing in-app outage status messages. These alert users to major service disruptions, and are meant to let them know that the outage has been resolved. The company confirmed the issues on May 26 and has since updated their status to note that the outage is over. It&#8217;s unclear if this is a wider issue or a localised one. As of writing, Instagram remains available for use on iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and Windows PCs.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WhatsApp\"><\/span>WhatsApp<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A major outage has swept the Internet. Many users rely on their internet connection only for Facebook. Because of this, many ISPs and cellular providers have reported downtime. This has led many users to assume that their problem is elsewhere. However, Twitter is also experiencing problems. As of 8:11 p.m. ET, the Facebook outage is over. It hasn&#8217;t been confirmed whether the problems are the result of malicious attacks or a bug.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Messages\"><\/span>Messages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a frequent user of Facebook, you&#8217;ve probably noticed a new feature called &#8216;Vanish Mode&#8217; in Messages. The &#8216;Vanish Mode&#8217; feature allows you to send disappearing messages, much like Snapchat. After you leave a chat, the message will be automatically deleted. Facebook has started rolling out Vanish Mode for Messenger in the US and other countries, but more regions will soon follow.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Libra_initiative\"><\/span>Libra initiative<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Libra initiative on Facebook today is not the first crypto-based currency. While Bitcoin is by far the most popular, its permissionless design meant anyone could build on top of it. This led to widespread concern about hackers and terrorists. The Libra initiative, however, is a new model of blockchain technology with a closed architecture. Only partners who have been approved by the association can build the wallets and infrastructure necessary to support a digital currency.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hacktivists\"><\/span>Hacktivists<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Several hacktivist groups have cropped up on Facebook today. While the purpose of these groups is to raise awareness for social causes, hacktivism has also become associated with vigilante actions. For instance, a hacktivist group, Anonymous, has exposed the personal information of police officers, putting them at risk. Another hacktivist group, Lulzsec, targets big organisations for challenge. Many nationalist hacktivist groups have engaged in cross-border hacker wars that have deteriorated into physical violence.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Localized_outages\"><\/span>Localized outages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, many people were reporting issues with Facebook. An outage began around 11:40 a.m. ET and was not fully fixed six hours later. The outage is believed to be centered around Facebook, although it is still unclear exactly what caused the outage. More than 125,000 people have reported issues with Facebook. The outage affected people in several different locations, including London. This isn&#8217;t the first time Facebook has faced outages &#8211; it happens infrequently.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Refresh_your_browser\"><\/span>Refresh your browser<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t open Facebook, it could be a site-wide issue.
