The problem was largely due to a faulty maintenance update that took the company&#8217;s internal systems offline. Because the company runs everything through Facebook, diagnosing the problem was difficult. It is still unclear how the problem was resolved. The company published a detailed blog post about the outage.<\/p>\n<p>The outage occurred because of a configuration error that caused the internet to disconnect all data centers around the world from Facebook&#8217;s DNS name servers. This failure caused the social network to experience a five-hour global outage affecting over 7 billion users. Early external analysis focused on the DNS server and changes in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). As a result, the company missed the larger problem that affected Facebook&#8217;s entire internet infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The outage affected the Facebook website, Instagram, and WhatsApp &#8211; all of which are used by 3.5 billion people around the world. Facebook&#8217;s network connects data centres around the world, and the outage affected users in more than 180 countries. Its users were unable to log into their accounts or use its mobile apps. An engineer accidentally issued a command that disconnected all of the company&#8217;s global data centers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Issues_with_Facebooks_data_centers\"><\/span>Issues with Facebook&#8217;s data centers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In an attempt to fix the massive global outage that affected Facebook and its app users, engineers rushed to a California data center to resolve an issue. The problem broke the internal systems of the social media giant, affecting billions of users and millions of advertisers. The outage lasted for five hours, and affected roughly seven billion users globally. Early external analyses focused on DNS and the BGP route, but didn&#8217;t detect an issue with Facebook&#8217;s backbone.<\/p>\n<p>A Facebook data center would consume double the amount of energy as a whole town. A councillor in Zeewolde, who lives near the proposed data center site, has voiced his opposition to the project. He says Facebook had not been upfront about its sustainability requirements. It&#8217;s not clear if Facebook has committed to the project, but it appears to be taking the route of least resistance. And if it goes ahead, residents could expect a public backlash.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent a repeat occurrence, Facebook engineers have begun a series of stress tests on their systems and applications. During these tests, the company will try to simulate a catastrophic event that could cause a sudden outage and cause some of the site&#8217;s services to go offline. A stress test is the first step in ensuring the reliability of data centers, as it helps engineers determine if any problems are preventing normal operation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ways_to_check_if_Facebook_is_working\"><\/span>Ways to check if Facebook is working<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If your Facebook app is not loading, you can try using the following ways to diagnose the problem. First of all, try logging out and logging back in to your account. Sometimes this fixes the problem. Second, you should make sure that your Facebook app is updated. The latest version of the app may be outdated. If it&#8217;s not, it might be time to upgrade. You can use an android emulator such as BlueStacks to run an older version of the Facebook app. Having a sufficient amount of RAM and storage is also necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to determine if your Facebook account is down is to log in to Twitter. You can use the hashtag #facebookdown to find out whether other users are also experiencing the same problem.
